On top of the reverse, the inscription: CANADA the issue country. On the bottom, the inscription: 30 DOLLARS the face value. The obverse depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt and the inscriptions: ELIZABETH II the name of the Queen and D. REGINA Dei Gratia Regina. Maple Leaf The maple leaf is the characteristic leaf of the maple tree, and is the most widely recognized national symbol of Canada. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the settlements located in New France had attained a population of about 18.000. By this time, the maple leaf had been adopted as an emblem by the French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. Its popularity with French Canadians continued and was reinforced when, at the inaugural meeting of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1834, the maple leaf was one of numerous emblems proposed to represent the society. Speaking in its favour, Jacques Viger, the first mayor of Montreal, described the maple as the king of our forest… The symbol of the Canadian people. The coin and packaging are both in impeccable condition! Design: At approximately 7:10 p. 1, 1959,’just another game’ turned into one of the landmark moments in NHL® history. All- Star Jacques Plante, in goal for the Montreal Canadiens, was struck in the face with a shot by Rangers forward Andy Bathgate at 3:06 of the first period. Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette, who has covered the NHL® for more than 50 years, described the scene after Plante was struck. When he came out with the mask, you could feel and hear the buzz of the crowd, Fisher recalled. The Canadiens went on to win, 3-1. The NHL® goalie mask soon became part of the goaltenders equipment despite initial resistance from some teams management. The style, shape and materials used have evolved over the years from the Plantes first model to the present day cage style masks which you see depicted on the coin. Beautifully engraved and painted, these Silver Goalie Mask Coins from the Royal Canadian Mint are another Mint first. Each team goalie mask is painted with the teams logo and colours. Equipped with superior peripheral and night vision, the timber wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis) surveys the wilds of western Canada with an unforgettable intensity in its gaze, which only adds to its mysterious allure. This elusive, powerful yet social species is the special focus of the fourth coin in an ongoing series, which features enamel-enhanced portraits of Canadas wildlife. The reverse design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc features a detailed portrait of a timber wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), also known as the Mackenzie Valley wolf. A close view of the wolfs facial features dominates the reverse, where the application of gold-toned enamel immediately pulls the focus towards its unforgettable stare. The colour effect adds a glowing intensity to each iris while darkening the pupils; breaking free from this locked gaze, a study of the wolfs other facial features shows an outstanding amount of detail.
