This Silver Colorized Maple Leaf Shaped Proof is the first ever full-color maple leaf shaped coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. 9999 fine silver, this piece is part of a limited mintage of just 15,000. The obverse of this colorized maple leaf features Queen Elizabeth II, as rendered by Susanna Blunt, at the center of the leaf. Inscriptions on the three extended sections of the leaf read “ELIZABETH II, ” “CANADA, ” and D. The design element and inscriptions are superimposed over a background that has the veins of the leaf design. The colorized reverse features a mix of the red, yellow, and orange colors commonly associated with the silver maple leaf in the fall. The veins running through the image bring it to life. The irregular edge and curved sinuses between its palmate lobes were designed through a labor-intensive process. At the center are two inscriptions, “20 DOLLARS, ” and “2016, ” the latter of which is bordered by a pair of silver maple leafs. A coin in GEM Proof condition is in equivalent condition to Proof 65 or better. As such, it may have a few contact marks and/or hairlines, but it has an attractive strike and retains all or nearly all of its original Mint luster.
