During the 17th and 18th centuries, the inhabitants of New France faced many hardships, including chronic shortages. The nascent colony was months away from the motherland, separated by the wide and treacherous Atlantic Ocean that claimed countless sailing ships. The long Canadian winter and the formation of ice made travel during half the year nearly impossible. Nonetheless, nearly all manufactured goods had to be imported from France, and were therefore incredibly scarce, especially coins! Despite these privations, merchants, civil servants and soldiers still had to be paid. Historic records show that cards were cut into halves or quarters, and some had their corners clipped, the better to reflect differing values. Despite the kings displeasure, authorities continued to implement this stopgap measure whenever their colony faced a coinage shortage. In 1729, they began using plain card stock which circulated like modern bank notes until New France fell to the British in 1759. Technology Note – Gold-Plating.
