The waters aquamarine colour is due to its erosive nature: roughly 60 tons of finely ground rock, dissolved salts and minerals are carried over the limestone crestline every minute! The Falls continue to erode the rocksome scientists have speculated that 50,000 years from now, the Horseshoe Falls will have withdrawn far enough to be reduced to little more than rapids! Barrel or no barrel, it is illegal (and dangerous) to deliberately attempt to go over Niagara Falls. A few daredevils have survived, but fish are better suited to taking the plungeand they do! The lighter, more pliable body of a fish is able to withstand the pressure, while air bubbles at the base of the waterfall helps cushion their fall.
