Featured on the central coin, the original Centre Block building on Parliament Hill was built to house the legislature of the Province of Canada. It was completed in 1866, but became the seat of government for the Dominion of Canada following Confederation in 1867. Tragically, fire gutted the Centre Block and its familiar Victoria Tower on the night of February 3, 1916, sparing only the Library of Parliament. Photography can be credited with helping to build this nation and develop its identity. Government use of photographs can be traced back to surveying expeditions in the Prairies during the 1850s and in the Arctic by the end of the century. Photos also became promotional tools for both private and commercial interests, including the railroad companies that sought to promote Canada as an immigration or tourist destination.
