The Bigger Picture: Polar Bear. The Toonie’s polar bear has been standing along the floe edge ever since, almost always alone. But what if there’s more to its story? The fifth coin in this Bigger Picture series re-creates the Toonie’s polar bear design and incorporates it into a larger scene that highlights the rugged beauty of its Arctic habitat, where a female polar bear joins “Churchill”, our Toonie’s polar bear mascot, glimpsing a seal in the water beneath the sun and sundogs in the sky. Canada is home to more than half of the world’s polar bear population, or roughly 16,000 of the estimated 20,000-25,000 found worldwide. It is the only bear species to be considered a marine mammal (its scientific name, Ursus maritimus, means “maritime bear”) due in part to its dependence on sea ice for hunting and travelling. Underneath its thick coat, a polar bear’s skin is black, which optimizes solar heating. Its fur is also translucent – it just looks white because of its ability to reflect visible light. In the sky, sundogs (parhelia) frame the sun as it shines above the Arctic landscape in early summer. The obverse features a maple leaf pattern and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Coin comes encapsulated with black beauty box. J & M Coin and Jewellery. Despite the species’ extinction 10,000 years ago, the Scimitar Sabretooth Cat continues to inspire and intrigue many who identify it with the last glacial period. It was fast, agile and could even climb trees. The coin weighs one ounce of pure silver and has a limited mintage of just 5,000. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt. The reverse design by Canadian artist Glen Loates portrays a scimitar sabre-tooth cat in standing atop a rocky outcrop in vast grassland. The image, reviewed for scientific accuracy by palaeontologists of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, presents a full-body portrait of the Ice Age predator, with its fierce teeth on display as it opens its mouth. A frosted “ice” like dome overlays the portrait. The portion of the portrait under the ice is coloured, while the remainder of the image is struck-only, giving the impression of a colourful window to our land’s ancient past. The reverse includes the text “CANADA” and the date 2018. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, as well as the coin value of 20 DOLLARS. Composition: 99.99% fine silver. Weight (g): 47.6. Diameter (mm): 52.35. Artist: Susanna Blunt (obverse). ONE OF OUR MOST UNFORGETTABLE FIRSTS: Our FIRST extreme curvature coin is an exceptional feat of craftsmanship, with a more deeply curved surface than any other concave- or convex-shaped coin. ANTIQUE FINISH: On the reverse, the antique finish gives the coin an appropriately aged and distressed look, while the engraved “cracks” and “markings” complete the helmet’s battle-worn appearance – a reminder of the reality of war and the hardships endured by those who fought and hoped for peace. A POWERFUL TRIBUTE TO COURAGE AND SACRIFICE: The small-scale replica of the steel helmet worn by Canadian soldiers in the First World War is a heartfelt tribute to their legacy, echoed in the poppy-flanked words engraved along the brim: “LEST WE FORGET N’OUBLIONS JAMAIS”.
