Proof-like quality 1967 Wolf, Bobcat and Hare coins. This large and visually stunning four-layer cutout coin stems from minting innovations developed by the Royal Canadian Mint’s Research and Development Facility. Just as the minting technology uses multiple layers, the theme is also multi-layered showcasing a forest scene where an animal predator may also be the prey. This is a substantial piece with a weight of more than three quarters of a kilogram (23.75 ounces) of fine silver and a 102 mm diameter. Mintage is limited to just 750 coins. Filled with lush flora and hidden fauna, the shadow box design is composed of superimposed layers of engraving that gently overlap, each casting shadows on the next and obscuring important story details that are only visible when viewed from a certain angle, ultimately revealing that the hunter may actually be the hunted. The setting is a boreal forest, where the nocturnal summer scene is divided into four separate layers of engraving that partially overlap to create a shadow box effect. With its antique finish, the bottom layer sets the mood by showing a full moon shining in the sky above the mountains and spruce covered foothills. Engraved on the uppermost layer (also with an antique finish), the woodland foreground is teeming with flora that have attracted a semi relict underwing moth on the upper right, and a hungry snowshoe hare at ground level. The two middle layers add more complexity and tension to this story: on the second layer, a lynx can be seen stalking the hare, while a pileated woodpecker -an insectivore-is resting not far from the moth; and the third layer shows a wolf pack tracking the lynx from the edge of a stream.
