We all view the world in our own unique way. And sometimes, we’re inspired to see things in a new light, which gives shape to new ideas-like the first ever Canada-shaped coin. Inspired by Canada’s geography, the coin’s contour wraps around the edges of the colour-over-engraved map of Canada, which is every bit as extraordinary as its 99.99% pure silver canvas. Much like our provinces and territories, Canada’s animal icons come in different sizes and shapes. And they are the ones who give shape to our map of Canada. These bird and mammal mascots are uniquely suited to their respective homes, and they reflect who we are as a people-whether it’s Nunavut’s Canadian Inuit dog or Ontario’s common loon. The reverse image by Alisha Giroux is a re-imagining of the map of Canada, with stylized birds or mammals forming the shape of each province and territory it represents. From left to right, these icons of the Canadian wilderness include: a raven (Yukon), Kermode bear (British Columbia), gyrfalcon (Northwest Territories), bighorn sheep (Alberta), white-tailed deer (Saskatchewan), Canadian Inuit dog (Nunavut), plains bison (Manitoba), common loon (Ontario), snowy owl (Quebec), chickadee (New Brunswick), osprey (Nova Scotia) and woodland caribou (Newfoundland and Labrador). The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). 100 grams (>3 troy ounces). From spring’s bright hues and sun-soaked summer greenery to fall’s foliage-led color change and winter’s snowy slumber, all four seasons unfold before your eyes, forming a spectrum of colors within the maple leaf that gives shape to our celebration of Canada’s natural beauty. The design is a composite of landscape features from across Canada, framed by the outline of a black maple leaf and backed by Canada geese flying in a V formation-a sign of the changing seasons in Canada. The four-season view begins with a spring scene on the left, where a tundra swan swims past flowery meadows and mountains under a colorful morning sky. The scene transitions to a bright summer day, as a grizzly bear catches its next meal. Beneath the migrating geese in the sky, the green foliage turns to red, orange, brown and yellow in the fall view, in which the setting sun casts its glow on the grasslands and the iconic bison. The final view, with its sleepy Arctic fox, captures the tranquil beauty of winter in Canada, while an iceberg adrift in the ocean hints at the eventual return of spring. Struck in just over 3 ounces of fines silver, the coin has a mintage limited to just 2,500 coins.
