2021 $50 First 100 Years of Confederation Canada Takes Wing 5 oz Silver Coin

The third and final coin in this historic Canada series takes to the skies for one last look at The First 100 Years of Confederation. It fuses art, history and industry. The coin weighs just over five ounces of pure silver, and has a mintage limited to just 1,250. Between 1945 and 1967, aviation technology sent us soaring to new heights and also brought us closer than ever before. At the end of the Second World War, our nation’s character had been established and our place on the international stage secured; but in the midst of Cold War tensions, our new-found sense of self emboldened us to champion peace and cooperation. It was a signal to the world that Canada had arrived. Designed by Canadian artist Glen Green, the main image features Canada’s famous bush plane, the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. The obverse combines five of the effigies that have appeared on Canadian coins since 1867 (clockwise, from top): the first effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, the effigy of King George VI by T. Paget, the effigy of King George V by Sir E. Mackennal, the effigy of King Edward VII by G. De Saulles, and the effigy of Queen Victoria by L. Only 10,000 of this First Year 2020-W Burnished Maples will be Released. That’s almost half that of the 1948 Silver Dollar. Struck at the Winnipeg Mint for the “First Time” in the History of the Maple Leaf Series. In 2019, the Royal Canadian Mint is changing up the issuance of their Maple Leaf Bullion Series by Releasing the First Silver Maple Leafs ever struck at the Winnipeg mint of the RCM as opposed to the traditional facility in Ottawa branch. Additionally, these “W” Mint Marked Maples will also boast a Gorgeous Burnished Finish. The Obverse of the Maple Leaf features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Susana Blunt. The Reverse features a simply elegant Sugar Maple Leaf design as created by Walter Ott and which has been used in the series since its earliest days. Right below the leaf, to the left of the stem, the “W” Mint Mark Appears. This combined with a satiny burnished finish is very reminiscent of the United States Mint’s Burnished American Eagle series which is struck at their West Point branch of the Mint and also boasts a “W” Mint mark.
