Some of the most spectacular tulip displays can be found each May in the National Capital Region (Ottawa-Gatineau), where the Canadian Tulip Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Since 1953, the festival celebrates a historic gift of tulips that have come to symbolize the enduring friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. After the Second World War, the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa in gratitude for Canada’s role in the Liberation of the Netherlands, and for having sheltered the future Queen Juliana and her family-including Princess Margriet, who was born in Ottawa in 1943 and attended the festival in 2022-during the war. That initial royal gift became an annual tradition, and today, over a million colourful tulips bloom in flowers beds and parks across Ottawa. When engraving a Sparkle of the Heart coin, you have to work closely with the engineer and the supplier to ensure the Dancing Diamond cage mount is integrated perfectly with the engraving. I find floral designs very satisfying to sculpt; this design, with its series of entwined tulips, was great fun to realize, and it beautifully complements the Dancing Diamond cage. Overall, this was one of the highlights for me this year!
