A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging (where packaging is applicable). Like modern engines of change, the locomotives of Canada have been instrumental in shaping our nation throughout its 150 years of history. These steam- and diesel-powered vehicles were at the heart of Confederation; helped link two of Canada’s coasts; opened up the west to new settlement, and laid the foundations of the multicultural society Canadians enjoy today. They have had an impact on all aspects of Canadian life; by transporting people and goods across this vast nation, the engines featured in the Locomotives Across Canada series of coins represent a historical snapshot of a nation coming into its own, helped by a spirit of innovation that persists today! An ideal 3-coin gift for any train enthusiast! Coins in your subscription include. Even the finest details shine in each meticulous design, thanks to the precision engraving, and the use of multiple finishes that add subtle contrasts. The selective application of gold plating shines the spotlight on each locomotive, while the gold-plated effigy ensures an elegance that makes this a truly exceptional keepsake. FREE EMBOSSED METAL TIN DISPLAY BOX! Order the subscription and receive a FREE embossed metal tin box with your third coin to display all three coins! Only 7,500 coins will be made available worldwide. Hurry and order yours today before they are all gone! ONE-OUNCE 99.99% PURE SILVER COINS! Your coins are GST/HST exempt! Designed by Canadian artist David A. Oram, the first coin in your subscription transports you to Toronto, ON, in the year of Confederation: 1867. The selective application of gold plating immediately draws the eye to the 4-4-0 locomotive of the Great Western Railway (GWR) in the foreground. The left-side three-quarter view allows for a thorough examination of the steam engine’s defining characteristicsfrom the balloon smoke stack and large driving wheels to the cattle guardall rendered in outstanding detail. In the background, the arched train shed of GWR’s Yonge Street passenger station adds an architectural point of interest, while the horse-drawn carriage waiting trackside completes this meticulously engraved snapshot of a bygone era. The reverse design by Canadian artist John Mantha looks back at the first wave of diesel-electric locomotives that were introduced in Canada in the 1940s and 1950s. Used by the Roberval and Saguenay Railway, the RS 20 was the first diesel road locomotive manufactured in Canada, and was built in 1949 by Montreal Locomotive Works. The selective application of gold plating places the focus on the early RS-2 road-switcher, which is made all the more visible thanks to the tiger-striped pattern, painted at the front. The rail yard in the engraved background is bustling with activity, and typifies the environment in which these versatile workhorses shine. On track to Confederationand beyond. Named for its wheel configuration of four leading (front) wheels and four driving ones, the iconic 4-4-0 “American” type of locomotive looms large in Canada’s railway history as the quintessential all-purpose locomotive of its time. The height of the 4-4-0′s popularity coincided with Confederationa time when Canadian union hinged on the promise of a railway link, which was fulfilled in the east with the completion of the Intercolonial Railway in 1872. By then, the 4-4-0 represented the overwhelming majority of the steam locomotives in service, including those that helped open the continent to new settlement in the west. Design adjustments and a larger boiler size resulted in more powerful 4-4-0 engines; but tasked with increasingly heavier loads, the 4-4-0′s limited firing capacity eventually led to its falling out of favour when larger engines (such as the Ten-Wheelers) entered the fray. Canada’s love for railroads began with the first railway constructed in 1836: the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Rail Road. Prior to 1853, all locomotives in British North America were imported from the United States or from Great Britain. On April 16, 1853, the Toronto Locomotive Work completed work on the first locomotive built in Canada: a 4-4-0 steam engine known as the Toronto. The third coin in the Locomotives Across Canada Series! Nearly a century after the arrival of the first diesel-electric engine, Canadas rail industry is once again being redefined by advances in engineering. This third and final coin in the Locomotives Across Canada series showcases the fuel-efficient General Electric ES44ACa low-emission engine that is a product of its time, and a reflection of the changing face of Canadas railways since 1867. Third and final coin in a series showcasing some of the locomotives that defined an era, and helped shape Canadas history as a nation! Even the finest details shine in this meticulous design, thanks to a keen attention to historical accuracy, the precision engraving, and the use of multiple finishes that add subtle contrasts. The selective application of gold plating shines the spotlight on the locomotive, while the gold-plated rim and effigy on the obverse ensure an elegance that makes this a truly exceptional keepsake. All three coins in the series are sure to be treasured additions to any historical, train or Canadiana-themed collection. They are also the perfect gift for any train enthusiast! In keeping with the first two coins in the series, this reverse design by Canadian artist John Mantha features selective gold plating that shines the spotlight on the General Electric ES44AC locomotive. The background features an outstanding amount of engraved detail that captures the majesty of Canadas diverse landscape: from the far-off mountain peak to the different textures of the surrounding vegetation, down to the gravel along the railroad ties. The shine of the coins silver surface also lends itself well to evoking the brightness of a summer dayin the sky, and on the surface of the winding river beneath it. Rounding the curves in the track, the gold-plated ES44AC locomotive is positioned in a way that allows for an ideal view of its front and side. The remarkable power of this fuel-efficient locomotive is evident in an almost endless line of railcars that stretch out behind it. Your coins are each encapsulated and presented in a beautiful embossed metal tin that complements the theme and adds a sense of nostalgia to this collecting experience. The indomitable spirit of the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) is evident in this reverse design by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater. The close-up portrait of its broad face features complex engraving that adds textural details throughout, especially in the rendering of its plumage. Special emphasis is placed on the owls eyes, where an enamel effect mimics the glossy look of a traditional paint application, but with far more colour variances that give the amber-coloured irises a more life-like appearance. They are further enhanced by glow-in-the-dark technology that adds a luminous intensity to the piercing gaze, which offers the only visible proof of the owls presence in the dark. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Ever notice how some animals have eyes that glow in the dark? Tapetum lucidum is a mirror-like layer in the eye that enhances an animal’s vision in low-light conditions, by reflecting light back to the retinal cells for a second pass. It’s also responsible for the colourful shine (eyeshine) that flashes from the eye when light is suddenly cast upon it. Like us, the owl’s forward-facing eyes provide it with a largely binocular field of view. But unlike us, it has poor peripheral vision since its eyes cannot move from side-to-sideinstead, the owl can rotate its head 270 degrees to study its surroundings. To protect its eye, the owl has three eyelids: a top lid that closes when the owl blinks, a bottom lid that comes up when the owl sleeps, and a thin, translucent tissue that sweeps sideways across the eye to clean and protect it. This is known as the nictitating membrane, and is common in several birds, fish, reptiles and mammals. Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box. Order your coin today! Composition 99.99% pure silver. Weight (g) 23.17. Packaging Maroon clamshell with black beauty box. Finished size 67 mm x 67 mm. The mythical keeper of secrets and seer of truths, the Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) is most active when night descends upon the boreal forest. Its acute vision is well suited to hunting in low-light conditionsa fact highlighted on the second coin in the Animal Eyes series, which combines an enamel effect and glow-in-the-dark technology to mimic the wondrous luminescence of these wild eyes. PEERING OUT FROM THE DARK: To complete this tribute to a nocturnal species, your coin also features glow-in-the-dark technology! Low mintage of 6,500. Previous coins featuring animal eyes have proved to be a hit with collectors, who have clamoured for more! The steady, unyielding gaze of the Canada lynx has a marked intensity to it in this reverse design by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater. The close-up portrait offers a rare face-to-face encounter with a famously elusive wild cat, whose mesmerizing features are engraved in outstanding textural detail. Special emphasis is placed on the felids eyes, thanks to the application of an innovative enamel effect that re-creates the glossy look of a traditional paint application, but with more nuanced colour variance to give these irises a more life-like appearance. The effect is enhanced by glow-in-the-dark technology, which mimics the naturally luminous effect of the nocturnal hunters stare during a rare night time encounter. With its combined use of glow-in-the-dark technology and colourful enamel effect, this third and final coin in the Animal Eyes series re-creates the luminous gaze of a legend of the wild, Canis lupus, whose keen eyesight facilitates any crepuscular activity. The amber-coloured eyes convey the wolfs intelligence and strength in this reverse design by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater. Complex engraving captures the wild canines likeness in remarkable detail, whether its the fine whiskers protruding from its muzzle or the textured appearance of the thick fur. THE EYES HAVE IT: To colourfully emphasize the eyes, our innovative enamel effect mimics the glossy look of colour enamel, but with more life-like complexity than ever achieved before! Amber eyes peer out of the darkness as night falls on the Canadian wilderness. Special emphasis is placed on the eyes, where an enamel effect mimics the glossy look of a traditional paint application but with far more colour variation, which gives each iris a more life-like appearance. The design is further enhanced by glow-in-the-dark technology, which evokes the luminous glow of the wolfs eyes when encountered in low-light conditions. OTHER COIN IN THE SERIES. PEERING OUT FROM THE DARK: A fitting tribute to a species known for its crepuscular activities, your coin also features glow-in-the-dark technology! Hold your coin under a light source for 30-60 seconds then view the coin in darkness, where the colourful eyes glowas they would during a nighttime encounter with limited light! Unsearched All of the coins offered in this listing are unsearched. Many coin dealers search all coins when they are received from the Mint. They “cherry-pick” the best coins. Then submit them to be graded, certified, and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc. When a dealer searches coins, those that they sell in original Mint packaging are only lesser quality coins. Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed. Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered. Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces. However, tilting the coin may resulting one side being slightly out of focus. Please review all of the photos provided to obtain the best understanding of the coin’s actual appearance. Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint. We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting. We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits.
