Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. The West African lion population is listed as Critically Endangered since 2016. The only lion population in Asia survives in and around India’s Gir Forest National Park and is listed as Endangered since 1986. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes lion populations in Africa. It is the second-largest living wild cat after the tiger, with some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, barring hybrids like the liger. In ancient historic times, their range was in most of Africa, including North Africa, and across Eurasia from Greece and southeastern Europe to India. In the late Pleistocene, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans; Panthera leo spelaea lived in northern and western Europe and Panthera leo atrox in the Americas from the Yukon River to Peru. 62.2 (2 oz). This incredible 2 Oz Silver coin is the second of the Animals in the Moonlight series, featuring 4 wilderness scenes of a cougar, lynx, orcas and owl under the magical glow of moonlight. In this the Lynx. The coin has a Glow-in-the-Dark effect, has a Proof quality and comes in an elegant case, along with the Certificate of Authenticity. Limited mintage to 4.000 pieces worldwide. The reverse of the coin by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater recreates a quintessential scene of log cabins in the northern forest with a lynx hiding among the trees nearby. It is a clear winter night. A full moon dominates the sky while a bonfire burns in a clearing below. The perspective gives the viewer the impression that they are approaching the cabins through the trees and have suddenly come upon a lynx that has quite possibly been there undetected for some time. The lynx is immediately recognizable by its housecat-like face, distinctive ear tufts, and pronounced facial ruff. Its massive forepaw is raised as if the lynx was about to move on, but has decided to stop to examine this stranger who has brought all this activity into its woods. The lynx gazes directly at the viewer, confident and unafraid; as if it was its decision to allow itself to be seen – a magical encounter that will be painfully brief before the majestic cat slips into the shadows in silence. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: CANADA the issue country, 2017 the year of issue, D·G·REGINA Dei Gratia Regina, 30 DOLLARS the face value and ELIZABETH II the name of the Queen. Lynx A lynx is any of the four species within the Lynx genus of medium-sized wild cats, which includes the bobcat. The name lynx originated in Middle English via Latin from the Greek word derived from the Indo-European root leuk in reference to the luminescence of its reflective eyes. Neither the caracal, sometimes called the desert lynx, nor the jungle cat, called the jungle lynx, is a member of the Lynx genus. Lynx have a short tail, characteristic tufts of black hair on the tips of their ears, large, padded paws for walking on snow and long whiskers on the face. Under their neck, they have a ruff which has black bars resembling a bow tie although this is often not visible. Body colour varies from medium brown to goldish to beige-white, and is occasionally marked with dark brown spots, especially on the limbs. All species of lynx have white fur on their chests, bellies and on the insides of their legs, fur which is an extension of the chest and belly fur. The lynx’s colouring, fur length and paw size vary according to the climate in their range. In the Southwestern United States, they are short-haired, dark in colour and their paws are smaller and less padded. As climates get colder and more northerly, lynx have progressively thicker fur, lighter colour, and their paws are larger and more padded to adapt to the snow. Their paws may be larger than a human hand or foot. The smallest species are the bobcat and the Canada lynx, while the largest is the Eurasian lynx, with considerable variations within species. Black bears also feature prominently in the stories and traditions of Native Americans. In autumn, black bears retreat into their dens to hibernate for several months. The mother bear (called a sow) gives birth to her cubs during her winter hibernation, usually in the late January or early February. A typical litter consists of two black bear cubs. They are born blind and helpless, with fine, gray, down-like hair, and are nursed by their mother, in the den, until the spring. When spring arrives the family leaves the den together in search of food. Although the cubs are independent at about six months of age, they stay with their mother for the first two years of their life. Highly Detailed, Original Work of Art. Deep within the boreal forest that is its home. With its head turned to the side, the lynx remains calm and composed as it crouches low on its perch atop a rocky outcrop, which provides it with a higher view of the area below. Selective color highlights the meticulously engraved portrait of this wild felid, capturing it in exquisite detail, from the varying tones of its thick fur to the beard-like ruff on both sides of its face and its black-tinged ear tufts. The moss and grasses at its broad feet add a fresh tinge of green and brown hues that contrast beautifully with the pale lynx. All against the engraved forest that looms in the background. The Canadian Lynx – “Grey Ghost” of the North! The shy and reclusive Canada Lynx. Is often called the gray ghost of the North. The Lynx is sometimes confused with the bobcat. But when one knows the differences, distinguishing between the two is easy. With its long, thick fur, prominent cheek ruffs, a short, black-tipped tail and oversize paws, it is perfectly adapted for winter. And its distinctive ear tufts amplify sound to make it a formidable hunter. It is also larger than a bobcat. And over twice the size of a large domestic cat. Is a solitary and secretive crepuscular animal, mostly active in the early morning and at dusk. Lynx tend to sleep during the day and are moderately active at night. Although solitary, at times small groups may be observed traveling together. The lynx roam about one and a half to three miles each day, and thus require a large territory. When food becomes scarce, the lynx territory will increase; most of the population will roam far, with a select few staying behind in their original territory. The cat tends to stay within 100 yards of the tree line, but does not shy away from swimming. One account records a lynx swimming two miles across the extremely cold Yukon River. Can be found in Canadas boreal forests from Newfoundland to the Yukon Territories, as well as in the northern tier of the United States. It hunts squirrels, grouse and deer, but its preference by far is the snowshoe hare. In fact, the populations of these two animals are inextricably linked. As long as 200 years ago, the Hudson Bay Company began noting how a rise in lynx led to a drop in hares, and how fewer hare led to fewer lynx. Back then, the lynx population would peak at 70 times its low. Today, development, forestry and hunting have brought peak lynx numbers down to six times the low. Efforts to revive the Canadian lynx.
