The Imperial State Crown. The Imperial State Crown is one of the most iconic pieces of royal regalia known as the Crown Jewels. This was the crown worn by Queen Elizabeth II upon leaving Westminster Abbey after her coronation in 1953; and in the many years that followed, it was the one that represented both her authority as Head of State and the grace with which she reigned. Edward’s Crown is only ever used for the coronation, the Imperial State Crown (or Crown of State) is worn on formal occasions, such as the State Opening of (British) Parliament. The State Crown has been replaced 10 times since the Restoration in 1660. The one depicted on this coin was made for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI, in 1937; it is a replica of the crown designed for Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in 1838. The coin’s reverse features the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by an artistic representation of the Imperial State Crown, as viewed from above. An arrangement of 16 blue and green glass stones stand in for the array of precious stones that adorn the crown, while the reverse includes four crystals-one for each of the effigies that have graced Canada’s coins since 1953. Edward’s Crown – Pure 1oz Silver Coin. While the Imperial Crown is most often worn by the monarch for formal events, it is the St. Edward’s Crown that is most revered and worn only once by each monarch on their coronation day. Edward’s Crown have been used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 11th century. The current crown was made in 1661 for King Charles II, and it was last used for the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953. The main coin design features an artistic representation of the front cross pattée from the St. Edward’s Crown bordered by a row of beads. The gold-plated embellishment is studded with coloured glass stones that stand in for some of the coronation crown’s many gemstones. With its long history and important function, St. Edward’s crown is considered to be the most treasured of all the Royal Jewels. The crown is composed of a solid gold frame set with 444 precious and semi-precious stones, including amethysts, aquamarines, garnet, peridot, rubies, topazes, tourmalines and sapphires. Similar to the medieval crown that inspired its design, the St. Edward’s Crown is distinguished by four crosses pattée (like the one featured on this coin), four fleurs-de-lis and gold bead-adorned arches that surround the ermine-trimmed velvet cap.
