2013 Canada $250 One Kilogram Fine Silver Coin Canada's Arctic Landscape

Canada’s Arctic Landscape. Mapped by Canadian explorers such as those of the 1913 Canadian Arctic Expedition, the lands, waterways, and continental shelves extending from the Northwest Passage to the nearer North are sovereign Canadian territories that play an important role in the heritage of Canada’s people, geography, and environment. This coin is certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a diameter of 101.8 millimeters and a metal weight of 1000 grams. The reverse design by Canadian artist W. David Ward presents a highly detailed portrait of the north shore of Baffin Island, overlooking Lancaster Sound, at the mouth of the Northwest Passage-a region that evokes the Arctic’s various landscape elements: icebergs, glaciers, mountains, ice plains, and frozen waters. Amid the semi-frozen sea water of Lancaster Sound, dotted with masses of ice, large icebergs float majestically under a cloud-filled sky. In the distance, on both sides of the Sound, jagged glacier-topped mountains rise against the horizon. The reverse features the text’CANADA’. The obverse features the date’2013′, the face value of’250 DOLLARS’ and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Just below the portrait is an astrolabe representing explorer Samuel de Champlain. This leads the eye to the centre of the design, which features Lower Fort Garry and the Red River Cart – a means of transportation over land and water. We see the Metis flag featuring the infinity symbol representing the coming together of the two distinct cultures: European and Native. To the lower left of the design are the Voyageurs travelling by canoe over the rapids, representing the development of the fur trade in Canada. Another major Canadian industry is represented by the salmon swimming upstream. Above the Voyageurs are images of David Thompson and Alexander MacKenzie representing the exploration and mapping of Canada to the Pacific coast. Beside MacKenzie is an image of Fort Langley, representing the west coast and trading posts, while above him is an image of the logging industry which used the river system for transportation.
