The latest innovation from our R&D lab raises the bar when it comes to dimensional design and allows the engraved focal point to reach new heights-literally. Introducing Lifted Engraving, a numismatic first that makes its world debut on this limited-edition prototype. The groundbreaking technology is a 3D approach to 2D coin art. It allows us to highlight a key design element by raising it above the engraved surface of the coin. To demonstrate its full potential, the never-before-seen technique has been applied to this 2020 pure silver version of the 1997 Flying Loon dollar. The loon you see lifting up from the coin’s surface is not an embellishment-it’s part of the coin. And so is the integrated hinge, which provides just the right amount of lift for our loon, and our new technology, to take flight on this prototype. How does it work? It’s all crafted from a single 99.99% pure silver blank and using the same minting process as a standard coin. The development of a new type of die makes it possible to strike the world’s first integrated hinge directly onto the coin’s surface. After deliberately cutting into the coin, the key relief (the loon) is then separated from the rest of the design using proprietary methods that “peel” away the field. And with both ends of the hinge coming together, the key relief is now in position to come out of the coin and greet the viewer. Add a numismatic first that makes its world debut on this limited-edition prototype to your collection today. YOUR EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK! This is a rare opportunity to own a prototype coin featuring the latest groundbreaking innovation from the Royal Canadian Mint’s R&D researchers. Our new Enhanced elevation technique allows the focal point of the design to reach new heights thanks to the world’s first integrated hinge, which raises the relief above the coin’s surface. Crafted from 2 oz. 99.99% pure silver, this coin is part of the initial test run for our new technology, and that’s why the mintage is so low. Your prototype coin comes packaged in an exclusive. Wooden box with a special certificate to explain the technology. A NEW LOOK, AN OLD FAVOURITE! This flying loon first appeared in 1997. Here, the new technology adds an extra dimension to the art by providing more lift for the loon during take-off. From the R&D Lab. Enhanced with Lifted Engraving, the loon has been smoothly cut away from its engraved lake setting and elevated above the coin’s surface with the help of an integrated hinge. The obverse features the repeating. Logo as a tiled background behind the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. It’s exciting to collaborate with the R&D team on a new technology. The way the design or specifications can change throughout the process is really interesting because there are some unique challenges that you don’t encounter with standard coins. Not being technical by training, I find it fascinating to see what our engineers can do. Josh Bednar, Product Manager, Royal Canadian Mint. The idea for this technology came about when we were exploring the fundamental assumptions we often take for granted about coins. In the past, we have asked questions like,’Why do coins have to be flat, ? Which resulted in an undulated flag coin; or’Why do coins have to be round? Which led to a maple leaf and even a Canada-shaped coin. For this product, we were curious enough to ask,’Do coins need to be planar? We were excited to discover that they do not need to be planar. It is possible to highlight a coin’s main feature and physically raise it above the surface. Eng, Product Engineer, Research &Development. Loons can only take off when they’re on the water. They also require a long runway to generate enough speed for liftoff. This Flying Loon design originally appeared on a silver proof dollar and a specimen dollar coin that was exclusive to the. And 1997 specimen sets. Packaging: Your prototype coin comes packaged in an exclusive. 99.99 % pure silver. Jean Luc Grondin (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse). I do leave feedback for everyone.

2016'The Loon Geometric Art' $20 Silver Coin 1oz. 9999 Fine (17503) (OOAK)

As digital artists seek to recreate the physical world through dimensional images, modelling techniques based on geometric shapes have given way to a new visual style: low poly art. This eye-catching five-coin series utilizes this art style to present a contemporary and highly artistic interpretation of Canada’s most famous icons, including one of its most beloved bird species: the common loon (Gavia immer). The reverse design by Canadian artist Calder Moore features a stylized portrait of two common loons in a pristine, natural setting that speaks of the majesty of Canada’s wilderness! Geometry, technology and art intersect as the entirety of the image is presented in a low poly art style, bringing together multiple polygon shapes in this depiction of an adult loon and its offspring. Each polygon is made distinct from the other through extraordinary sculpting, cutting-edge technology and advanced finishing techniques, while the application of bold colour adds vibrancy and alters our perception of dimension and light. The careful selection of each colour gives the cloudless summer sky its dazzling cerulean tone, making it the perfect backdrop for the towering white and grey peaks of the Rocky Mountains-all beautifully recreated using the hard lines and edges that are characteristic of low poly art. In the foreground, the adult loon is a picture of grace and elegance as it calmly floats on the surface of a blue lake, surrounded by the tranquility of an evergreen forest that is rich with detail and colour. Underwater, the young loon demonstrates the species’ remarkable diving abilities as it uses its webbed feet to propel it forward like a torpedo, its beak quickly closing in on the small fish that will provide it with a well-earned aquatic feast. A fresh, modern take on Canada’s timeless icons: The first coin in the inventive new five coin Geometry in Art series, which reinterprets familiar Canadian emblems-the polar bear, the beaver, the caribou, the loon and the maple leaf-in a low poly art style. Crafted in 99.99% pure silver with a low mintage set to only 7,500 worldwide. Cutting-edge techniques for a dimensional design: Exceptional engraving, relief and the application of different finishing techniques add distinctiveness to the polygon shapes that form the stylized image, resulting in a stunning composition that showcases the Royal Canadian Mint’s exceptional level of craftsmanship and innovative artistic vision! An unforgettable addition to any collection-especially those with a wildlife, nature or Canadiana theme, or any that include the beloved symbols that have come to represent this land and its people. Composition 99.99% pure silver. Weight (g) 31.83. Pre-owned, Missing Case, Coin with Capsule & Certificate only. LAUNCH DATE: November 3, 2015. The worlds first new Enhanced elevation technique allows the focal point of the design to reach new heights thanks to the world’s first integrated hinge, which raises the relief above the coin’s surface. Rare prototype coin featuring the latest groundbreaking innovation from the Royal Canadian Mint’s R&D researchers.
