The National War Memorial was originally commissioned in 1925 as a competition open to all British subjects worldwide. It garnered 127 entries from Canada, France, England, Belgium, Scotland, Trinidad, Belgium, and the United States. The winner was English sculptor Vernon March, who had completed other memorials for Canada. When Vernon March died unexpectedly during the sculptures construction, his brothers and sister completed his work. The Memorial was unveiled by King George VI in 1939 in honor of those who served during the First World War. It was rededicated in 1982 to include the Second World War and the Korean War and again in 2014 to include the South African War and the Afghanistan mission. Each year at the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11, national attention is fixed on the Memorial as Canadians remember wartime sacrifice during a moment of silence. The Memorials symbolism has evolved since it was first unveiled in 1939 specifically to honor Canadians who served in the First Word War. As the years have passed and Canadians continued to serve in the times of war that followed, the meaning of the monument has grown to encompass the sacrifice of all Canadian Armed Forces members during times of war. Beautifully presented in a Royal Canadian Mint branded wooden box, lined with black flocking and including a removable insert and special certificate compartment. Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin (or set), one coin (or set) is picked at random and photographed. Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered. Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces. However, tilting the coin may result in one side being slightly out of focus. Please review all of the photos provided to obtain the best understanding of the coin’s actual appearance. Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint. We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting. We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits. The item “2018 Renewed $1, National War Memorial Masters Club 2 oz. Other Master’s Club Coins are here. The fourth coin in our exclusive Masters Club series of historic half-dollar designs! This selectively gold plated silver coin re-creates the 1967 half-dollar by Canadian artist Alex Colville and celebrates the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Add this stunning coin to your collection today. CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF THE BIRTH OF ALEX COLVILLE : To commemorate the 100th anniversary of our nation’s Confederation in 1967, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a new set of circulations coins bearing reverse designs by acclaimed Canadian artist Alex Colville, who crafted beautiful images of animals he felt reflected some of Canada’s most admirable qualities; among others, the howling wolf on the reverse of the half-dollar. Now, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Colville, his coin designs are as relevant and beloved as everthey are a gorgeous depiction of Canada’s natural beauty, and a powerfully symbolic representation of the Canadian spirit. HISTORICAL AND PURE OF SYMBOLISM: The wolf featured on the half-dollar was carefully selected to represent the virtues and qualities of the artist’s homelandColville’s Canadaas explained in the artist’s own words: The wolfis here symbolic of the vastness and loneliness of Canada, and thus of our tradition and to a degree, of our present condition. SELECTIVE GOLD PLATING: This stunning silver coin features selective gold plating on both the reverse and the obverse to bring depth and patina to the historical design. INCLUDES SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE: The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. Design: The reverse recreates the 50-cent circulation coin from 1967 designed by Canadian artist Alex Colville, and features the side profile of a howling wolf. Detailed engraving recreates the animal’s outline and conveys the texture of its fur as it sits on its hind legs, its head tilted up to the sky to release its cry into the air. The image is enhanced by the application of selective gold plating over the wolf and all along the coin’s rim. The reverse also features a special mark “100 YEARS/ANS ALEX COLVILLE” to commemorate the centennial of the artist’s birth, the words “50 CENTS”, “CANADA” and the date “2020″. The obverse features selective gold plating on the second effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. A competition launched in 1964 invited Canadian artists, sculptors and designers to submit their designs for the circulation coins that would be issued in 1967 for the 100th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. On April 20, 1966, a winner was finally announced: Canadian painter Alex Colville of Sackville, N. Some of his most famous paintings include. To Prince Edward Island. 2019 Canada 2 oz. Fine Silver Masters Club Renewed Silver Dollar – Peacekeeping. For a relatively small, young country, Canada has made a significant contribution to international peacekeeping over the last half-century. Present at the inception of the United Nations mandate for official military peacekeeping interventions, Canada played a key role in one of the UN Emergency Forces first interventions: the 1956 Suez crisis in Egypt. This contribution not only earned Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson the Nobel Peace Prize but was also a pivotal moment in Canadians understanding of their nations place on the world stage. Celebrate Canadas proud history of peacekeeping with this exclusive coin available only to Masters Club members! 2 OUNCES OF PURE SILVER! Celebrate Canadas proud history of peacekeeping with this exclusive coin available only to Masters Club members. The fifth coin in our popular series of renewed silver 1-dollar coins. Beautifully presented in a Royal Canadian Mint branded wooden box, lined with black flocking and including a removable insert and special certificate compartment. Selective gold plating adds a touch of elegance to the design on the reverse, the effigy on the obverse, and the rim that frames the mirror-like proof finish! The reverse image features the design from the Canadian 1995 one-dollar circulation coin depicting the Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa, Ontario. The central figure on the image is plated in gold. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery Hunt. Her Majestys effigy is plated in gold. The reverse design for this coin is based on the Canadian 1995 one-dollar circulation coin commemorating Canadian peacekeepers. The image depicts the Peacekeeping Monument, Reconciliation, which stands in the heart of Canadas national capital. This monument, designed by Canadian artists Jack Harman, Richard Henriquez, and Cornelia Oberlander, presents two male peacekeepers and one female peacekeeper on a rubble-like stone base, looking out from high ground. Canadas peacekeeping experience during the Suez crisis was an important motivator behind Prime Minister Lester B. Pearsons drive to give Canada its own flag. During the crisis, Egypt requested that Canadian troops not participate on the ground because the flag on their uniformswhich at the time was the Red Ensign that bears an image of the Union Jackclosely resembled that of England. The Egyptian leadership could not guarantee that its people would not confuse Canadians with the British, whom Egypt considered an enemy in the conflict. 99.99% pure silver. The obverse features the historic effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. The silver dollar issued in 1980 was one of the first Canadian coins to feature a polar bear on its reverse. It certainly wouldn’t be the last. Two-thirds of the world’s polar bears are found in Canada and some of the largest populations reside along the northwest coast of Baffin Island, the largest of the Arctic islands (it’s also the fifth largest island in the world). Beautifully presented in a Royal Canadian Mint branded wooden box, lined with black flocking and including a removable insert and special certificate compartment. Order your coin today!
