2012 Canada Farewell to the Penny Fine Silver 5-Coin Set
Each of the five coins in this exceptional commemorative set of five Canadian 1-cent coins is certified to be 99.99% pure silver. This unique set celebrates the evolution of Canada’s penny from its first striking at the Royal Mint in Ottawa (later the Royal Canadian Mint) in 1908 to the 1-cent coin’s final striking at the Royal Canadian Mint’s Winnipeg branch in 2012. Though the reverse and obverse design of this penny predates the Royal Mint’s presence in Canada, when the first coin was struck on Canadian soil in 1908, it was a penny just like this one. The reverse features the maple wreath design that had been present on Canadian 1-cent coins since the Victorian era, framing a central field featuring the words “ONE CENT” and the year of production. The obverse features the effigy of King Edward VII. In 1911, George V became king and the obverse of the Canadian 1-Cent coin changed to feature the effigy of the new monarch. At the same time, a new reverse design featuring the word “CANADA” was introduced. In 1920, the Royal Mint not only made the penny smaller but also introduced a new reverse design featuring two maple leaves and the words “ONE CENT” and CANADA. ” The obverse continued to feature the effigy of King George V, though complications in 1936 caused by the abdication of King George V’s successor, Edward VIII, led the Mint to modify the 1936 dies in order to produce never-circulated George V “dot cents in the event of a delay in production of 1937 coinage. To celebrate Canada’s centennial, Canadian artist Alex Colville created a special commemorative reverse design for the penny featuring a rock dove in flight. In 1982, the shape of the penny was modified from perfectly circular to a 12-sided design to assist the visually impaired. This shape was maintained until 1997, when the penny became round again until its final striking in 2012. The obverse has featured four different effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II since 1953. The effigy introduced in 1990, which appears on the coin in this set, was the first to be created by a Canadian Dora de Pédery-Hunt. 2022 Canada 1c Pure 5 oz. Silver Coin – Farewell to the Penny 10th Anniversary. A nostalgic look back! It was 10 years ago, in 2012, that the last Canadian penny was struck at our Winnipeg facility. Until that moment, the copper-plated cent was everywhere: it jingled in the pockets and purses of Canadians for generations filled countless coin jars and its maple leaf twig design was a part of our everyday lives. Now, a decade later, its iconic design has been given a new life and a modern twist on this 5 oz. Fine silver tribute, which has been enhanced with reverse gold plating to add a precious gleam. Gold plating fills the field, while the engraved relief consists of a multifaceted, geometric rendering of the iconic maple leaves and twig. The obverse features a “P” composition mark indicating the gold plating, and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Since the Mint opened its doors in 1908, we’ve minted around 35 billion of one-cent circulation coins, but we’ve also recycled over six billion of them since 2013. Unlike the other denominations of Canadian circulation coinage, the one-cent coin’s design remained largely unchanged after the maple leaf twig made its debut in 1937. The only exception was in 1967, when a rock dove design by Alex Colville appeared on the penny to mark the 100th anniversary of Confederation. Specifications: Composition: 99.99% pure silver with reverse gold plating Mintage: 1,500 Weight: 157.6 g Diameter: 65.25 mm Face Value: 1 cent Finish: Proof Edge: Serrated Artist: Matt Conacher (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse) Special Features. A modern interpretation! The penny’s iconic maple leaf twig design is back, but there’s a twist! The twig and twin maple leaves have been given a more contemporary appearance, with geometric angles that add more depth than ever, and engraved facets that catch and reflect the light. Reverse gold plating! This coin is crafted from 5 oz. Of 99.99% pure silver, which is only visible on the effigy and select design elements on the reverse.
