Canada’s Unexplained Phenomena: The Clarenville Event. What happens when a UFO witness is an on-duty police officer? Enhanced with black light-activated technology (black light not included), our THIRD Unexplained Phenomena coin is a colourful retelling of a famous Canadian UFO event. The 1978 Clarenville Incident is a compelling account that can’t be easily dismissed since it involved several witnesses, including an RCMP officer who described a strange sight that has never been satisfactorily explained. October 26, 1978, 1:45 a. Responding to a call, RCMP Constable James Blackwood arrived at the scene in Clarenville, N. Where witnesses directed his attention to a brightly lit object in the sky. Using binoculars and a high-powered scope, they observed the fin-tailed, oval-shaped craft as it hovered above the water near Random Island. It emitted no sound; and when the officer flashed the lightbar on his police cruiser, the mysterious craft instantly mimicked the lights. It remained in the area for nearly an hour before rising up suddenly and vanishing into the night, leaving no trace of its passage – except a credible eyewitness account. The reverse design by Adam Young is an artistic representation of a 1978 UFO event that took place in Clarenville, N. Rendered in a colourful and expressive art style, the landscape-oriented image shows the event from the perspective of the witnesses, including the RCMP officer whose police cruiser appears in the bottom right corner. The oval-shaped craft is seen hovering over Random Sound on a clear night. Black light-activated technology adds a bright glow to the mysterious object and its illuminated reflection on the water. I wanted this piece to include all the elements of the 1978 experience while also incorporating the rugged yet whimsical coastline so often found in the Newfoundland landscape. Light and line direction were also important aspects of the design, creating a circular visual flow throughout the composition. This has been an exciting artistic endeavor, which, throughout my research for the design, has caused me to tumble down the rabbit hole of other Canadian UFO sightings. When I arrived at the wharf, people were milling about and looking up at the sky in disbelief. What struck me the most was the size and brightness of the object, and the lack of noise everything was so quiet. Expert: James Blackwood, Eyewitness: The Expert. I clearly remember that night, when the whole family was watching a news story about an unidentified object in the Montréal sky, and it totally captured my attention. This coin design gave me an opportunity to marvel and recreate the energy I felt that evening, and it has rekindled my childhood fascination with UFOs. This is my second project within the. Series and I can truly say that these coins are among my favourites! The stories are mysterious and intriguing, and they will open your mind to the possibility that UFOs exist. Christa Bruce, Product Manager. The Place Bonaventure UFO was seen by dozens of witnesses as it seemed to hover over the hotels rooftop pool. Guests alerted hotel staff, including a security guard, who in turn called a newspaper reporter, all of whom said they watched the stationary object hanging in the sky, displaying an odd clocklike pattern of lights. Photos taken that night remain hotly disputed as to what they depict: A reflection of underwater pool lights? Spotlights on a nearby skyscraper? Even RCMP were mystified that night, and the incident is still regarded today as one of Canadas most curious UFO cases. Chris Rutkowski, Science Writer. This was a fun design to model since I stayed at this hotel a few years after the Montréal Incident. Given the three-quarter perspective, I thought it would be wise to create concentric ovals radiating from the UFO and a Fresnel lens effect for the six beams of lightthis helps reflect the light in a unique way. For the colour application, the challenge was to align the paint files with the many straight, hard lines in the designbuildings, windows, steps, pool deck and swimming pooland this made for an interesting effect as the light beams can also be seen on the pool surface. Stan Witten, Senior Engraver. The incident depicted on your coin isnt the only time a UFO was spotted in Montréalaccording to the annual Canadian UFO survey, its one of the Canadian cities with the most reported sightings each year.
