The silver dollar issued in 1980 was one of the first Canadian coins to feature a polar bear on its reverse. It certainly wouldn’t be the last. Two-thirds of the world’s polar bears are found in Canada and some of the largest populations reside along the northwest coast of Baffin Island, the largest of the Arctic islands (it’s also the fifth largest island in the world).
