The building and the coin’s outer edge are plated in 99.99% pure gold. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin from the original 1976 commemorative silver dollar. The Queen’s crown and mantle are plated in 99.99% pure gold. Canada’s first Parliamentary Librarian, Alpheus Todd, was also a renowned expert on parliamentary government and one of the founders of the Royal Society of Canada. The pre-Confederation fires and the 1916 fire are not the Library’s only near misses. In 1888, the building survived a tornadothough the slate tiles on its wrought-iron roof dome did not. These were replaced with copper. In 1952, a fire in the cupola caused significant smoke and water damage to the Library’s interior, necessitating structural repairs and reproduction of some of the wood fixtures. The library underwent a major renovation between 2002 and 2006 that included replacing thousands of square metres of copper roofing, removing bedrock to create a basement, and enhancing internal climate control to protect the integrity of the collection. The building in the Centre Block is the main branch of the Parliamentary Library, but there are a number of other branches across Canada. The collection at the main branch includes approximately 600,000 works. Canada’s Library of Parliament, located in the Centre Block of Parliament Hill, is remarkable for several reasons. Architecturally, it showcases the neo-gothic details of Canada’s original parliamentary precinct design. Said to have been modelled on the British Museum’s reading room, the library’s circular structure is supported by sixteen flying buttresses. Its exterior of Nepean sandstone harmonizes with the building’s picturesque setting on a promontory overlooking the Ottawa River. The interior centres around a reading room commonly known as Canada’s most beautiful room. Punctuated by a tall marble statue of Queen Victoria, this chamber opens to the vaulted ceiling of the cupola. Several rings of carved gothic windows encircle this roof at various elevations. The library stacks are made of handsomely carved white pine. The Library houses a body of works whose oldest items originated in the legislative collections of Upper and Lower Canada in the 1790s. When the two regions (Ontario and Quebec) were united as the Province of Canada in 1841, the libraries were combined. The collection moved several more times, along with the location of the provincial and national capitals, before the present Library of Parliament building was completed in Ottawa in 1876. The library’s popular claim to fame is that it survived the fire that gutted the heart of Parliament on February 3, 1916. He also requested that the entryway include iron doors that could seal off the precious collection. Todd’s foresight was drawn from experience in an era when lanterns, candles, and fireplaces were standard interior fixtures (along with cigars, pipes, and cigarettes). In 1849, most of the collection had been decimated in a fire set by protestors in Montréal. In Québec in 1854, the entire collection had been threatened by a fire that engulfed that city’s legislative building. Thanks to Todd’s advance planningand the quick actions of library clerk Michael MacCormac, who ordered the doors closed before the 1916 Centre Block fire could make its way into the Librarythe stunning structure and its priceless holdings are with us to this day. Full of symbolic meaning, the Arms of Canada were first proclaimed by King George V on November 21, 1921. The Royal Canadian Mint commemorates the 95th anniversary of the Arms of Canada, with an exquisite 99.99% pure gold kilogram coin that showcases this powerful national emblem, which continues to herald the history and values of our nation to the world. Exceptionally low mintage of just 500 coins worldwide makes this an exclusive and prestigious collecting opportunity. A timeless celebration of Canada, its proud people, history and heritage through this exquisite depiction of a distinguished national symbol. Artfully crafted from one kilogram of 99.99% pure silver, with selective gold plating that adds a timeless elegance to the reverse and obverse. Kilogram coins are usually struck between 2 to 4 times, with weight in excess of 800 tonnes to achieve the levels of relief and brilliant field that are seen here. The reverse design features an outstanding amount of engraved details, all skilfully enhanced through polishing techniques that produce a range of matte and sparkling shades of pure silver. The selectively gold-plated reverse features a faithfully detailed reproduction of the Arms of Canada, as drawn by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, Fraser Herald at the Canadian Heraldic Authority. At the centre is the shield; in the upper quadrants lie the three royal lions of England, the royal lion of Scotland, the harp of Ireland and the royal fleurs-de-lis of France, while the bottom portion features a sprig of three maple leaves to represent Canadians of all origins. On either side of the shield are the supporters, which are based on those of the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom: to the left is a lion holding a lance with the Union Jack, while at right is a unicorn (a royal symbol of Scotland) holding the royal flag of France. The circlet behind the shield reads Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam (They desire a better country), while above the shield is the royal helmet draped with a mantle representing maple leaves. Atop the royal helmet is the crest set on a wreath of twisted white-and-red cloth, and is comprised of a crowned lion holding a maple leaf in its righ paw. Above the crest is the royal crown that represents the monarch as Canadas Head of State. At the base of it all lies a garland of floral emblemsthe English rose, the Scottish thistle, the Irish shamrock and the French lilybeneath a scroll that reads the motto of Canada, A Mari usque ad Mare (From sea to sea). 2015 Canada Glow-In-The-Dark Moonlight Fireflies Silver Coin SOLD OUT at RCM

Only 4000 pieces ever minted! Its a phenomenon that seems mysterious, elusive and almost magical; the sight of a fireflys (Lampyridae) glow lighting up the darkness on a hot summer night is enchanting, and often evokes childhood memories of trying to catch one by a lake or while camping in a forest. In a unique celebration of a remarkable natural phenomenon in Canadas wilderness, this beautifully coloured coin recreates the magic of a fireflys glimmer on a moonlit night with the use of glow-in-the-dark technology. The entire reverse image by Canadian artist Ervin Molnar combines rich colours and detailed engraving to recreate the beauty of a moonlit night in the Canadian wilderness. Twilight brings tranquility to the forest, where a canoe has brought campers to rest along the shore for the night. There is an added element of magic in the warm night air as fireflies take flight and intermittently light up the darkness. In the foreground, two fireflies can be viewed up close and in great detail, with colour recreating their delicate wings and markings along their abdomen. But the full effect of the coin is best viewed in the dark after placing it in a light source for 30 to 60 seconds; photo-luminescent technology transports the viewer into the coins campsite by recreating the only sources of light: the enchanting spark of light emitted by the fireflies, along with the campfires amber flames and the bright full moon that are reflected on the still surface of the water. Photo-luminescent elements recreate the magic of seeing a firefly on a moonlit night in the Canadian wilderness. Detailed engraving and the use of colour on the entire reverse create a dazzling image, while Royal Canadian Mint-first, multi-coloured, glow-in-the-dark technology with variable intensity adds a beautiful glow to the moon, the fire and the fireflies. The effect occurs after placing the coin in a light source for 30 to 60 seconds, then bringing it into the dark to experience the sight of fireflies at a campsite even visible through the capsule! Crafted from 99.99% pure silver with a limited mintage of 4,000 worldwide. Makes the perfect gift for a nature lover, or for those who will revel in the innovative use of glow-in-the-dark technology. Composition 99.99% pure silver. Mintage 4,000. Weight (g) 62.7. Diameter (mm) 54. Artist Ervin Molnar. Packaging Maroon clamshell with custom beauty box. Finished size 88 mm x 88 mm.
