BUTTERFLY Landscape Illusion Silver Coin 20$ Canada 2016

This is the second Silver coin in a new exciting series Landscape Illusion and brings the fascinating art of illusion in this five-coin series. Each coin features an image of a Canadian landscape, but combines natural elements in the scene to create an optical illusion of wildlife – like the butterfly on this coin. Limited mintage to 5.500 pcs worldwide. The reverse design by Canadian artist Julius T. Csotonyi features a springtime scene beautifully crafted in colour. A stand of flowering trees of dogwood and black plum rises above the calm waters of a lake, but on closer examination, a monarch butterfly emerges from the scene. One wing lies outstretched among the branches while the other is a reflection in the water. A northern map turtle lingers near the shore, providing the perfect shape for the butterflys body and eye. Monarch Butterfly The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species. Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.910.2 cm. The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller and has an extra black stripe across each hind wing. The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer-autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north. The western North American population of monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains often migrates to sites in California but has been found in overwintering Mexican sites as well. Monarchs were transported to the International Space Station and were bred there. After a ten-fold drop in the population of the eastern monarch butterfly population over the last decade, a 2016 study predicted an 11%-57% probability that this population will go extinct over the next 20 years.
