In 1892, the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, donated a silver bowl for the purpose of fostering a competitive spirit between Canada’s amateur hockey teams. From this expression of support sprung a rich legacy, as the Stanley Cup evolved into one of the most revered trophy in professional sportsand a celebrated icon in Canada. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup’s origins, with a one-of-a-kind shaped coin that pays tribute to hockey’s ultimate prize. A coin all NHL fans simply must have! AN OUTSTANDING ROYAL CANADIAN MINT FIRST! Introducing the first ever Stanley Cup shaped coin! A STUNNING REPLICA OF THE CUP! Struck in a beautiful reverse proof finish, your coin is a stunning replica of the Cupalbeit on a smaller scale. CELEBRATES THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STANLEY CUP! A one-of-a-kind way to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup and its rich history. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. 99.9% PURE SILVER COIN! Developed by the Royal Canadian Mint’s team of R&D specialists, engineers and engravers, this pure silver coin has a unique shape that is instantly recognisable to hockey fans that have ever dreamed of hoisting the Stanley Cup at centre ice. The reverse design presents a reduced-scale replica of the illustrious hockey trophy, all in a magnificent reverse proof finish. Detailed engraving recreates the ringed appearance of the Cup’s rounded barrel base, topped by the silver bowl that replicates the one donated by the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley. The finer details are enhanced by the application of different finishes that alter the way light reflects off the coin’s silver surface, thus infusing the innovative design with a life-like sense of depth and dimension. The Stanley Cup is made of a silver and nickel alloy; it measures 89.54 centimetres tall and weighs 15.5 kilograms. It was retired in 1970 but remains on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario. The bowl had an initial base ring; by 1902, there was no room left to engrave the winning team’s name. Teams then began engraving their names on the bowl itselfincluding the 1906-07 Montreal Wanderers, who were the first to inscribe their name inside the bowl and the first to engrave their full roster. Today, there is a limit of 52 engraved names from each winning team. Some player and even team names appear misspelled on the Cup, including the 1980-81 New York “Ilanders” and the 1971-72 “Bqstqn” Bruins. Henri Richard’s name appears a record 11 times on the Cup as a player, while Scotty Bowman appears nine times as a coach; team-wise, the Montreal Canadiens hold the record with 24 Stanley Cup wins, including a record five in a row between 1956 and 1960. The five-band barrel offers enough room on the Cup to engrave 13 winning teams. When all the rings are full, the oldest band (at the top) is removed and preserved at the Hockey Hall of Fame, while a new band is added to the bottom of the Cup. Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded rectangular black clamshell with NHL branded beauty box. 99.9% pure silver. I do leave feedback for everyone. Artist Tami Mayrand presents a symbolic homage to Canada through the classic images that broadly define what it means to be Canadian. Each engraved icon represents a Canadian theme or idea; united by an application of red paint, they form the distinctive silhouette of a predominant Canadian symbol: the maple leaf. Within this pointed outline, the nation’s geography, flora and fauna are well represented by various silhouettes: a mountain peak; small maple leaves; pine cones; an evergreen tree; birds in flight; a wolf; a moose; polar bear; squirrel; sea lion; bear; bison; a Canadian Inuit dog; and our national symbol, the beaver. A blade of wheat and a bottle of maple syrup highlight some of Canada’s most famous agricultural exports, while a hatchet alludes to the forests that have shaped the nation’s history. Inukshuks and a tepee pay tribute to the history and richly varied cultural traditions of Canada’s First Nations peoples, while a schooner, whale tail, salmon, and orca are a nod to Canada’s coasts. Canada’s innovative spirit is well represented by an icon of the aeronautic industry, and the tower that defines Toronto’s skyline. But most prominent of all is our love for the great outdoors, and the pastimes we enjoy through the seasons, as illustrated by: snowflakes; a snowman; a curling stone; a snowmobile; sprig of holly; a canoe; a Muskoka chair; figure skates; winter gear; and ski equipment. A puck, helmet and skate are included to reflect a nation’s fervent passion for its winter sport, including a hockey stick that forms the maple leaf’s petiole. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with Canada 150 themed black beauty box. 99.99% pure silver. Tami Mayrand (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse).
