2018 25c Big Coin: Caribou – Pure Silver Coin. This 5 ounce 2018 Big Coin fine silver 25 cent features the classic caribou design. While the 2017 Big Coin quarter had a mintage of 2,150, the mintage for the 2018 issue is just 1,500. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt. The Design: This big 25 cent is impressive with a weight of just over five ounces of pure silver and a diameter of 65 mm. The design is also a classic work of Canadian art, originally created by Emanuel Hahn’s iconic left-side profile of a caribou with majestic antlers. The caribou is selectively rose gold-plated. The reverse is engraved with the word “CANADA”, the date “2018″ and the face value of “25 CENTS”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Her Majesty’s portrait is rose gold-plated. This design appeared on circulating quarters in 1937 as part of the government’s program to modernize the coinage.
