Designed by artist Joel Kimmel, your coin isbased on Stefan Michalak’s account of what transpired on May 20, 1967, near Falcon Lake, Manitoba. A full application of colour re-creates the springtime colours of the place where Michalak saw twoobjects appear in the midday sky. Based on the witness’s descriptions and sketches, the oval-shaped UFO on the reverse has a steel-like appearance as it hovers above him. Black light-activated features complete the story by mimicking the distinctivered glow described by Michalak, while adding a yellow hue to the blast of hot air or gas that knocked the amateur prospector on his back and left him with mysterious burn marks. The reverse includes the engraved word “CANADA”, the face value “20 DOLLARS” and the year “2018″. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Around midday on May 20, 1967, amateur prospector Stefan (Stephen) Michalak was on the hunt forprecious metals in Whiteshell Provincial Park when he suddenly noticed two strange objects in the sky. Both glowed with an intense red and glare as they descended from the sky; one abruptly left the scene, but the other landed roughly 50 metres away from Michalak, who moved in to get a closer look. The humming object was described as having a sulphurous smell, and it appeared to be made from a stainless steel-like material. Peering into a brightly lit opening, Michalak heard muffled sounds and tried calling out to them, only to be met with silence. He touched the seamless sides of the craft, which melted the tips of his glove; and when the UFO suddenly lifted off the ground, it emitted a blast of hot air or gas that knocked Michalak on his back, igniting his shirt and causing a grid-like pattern of third-degree burns to his chest. What was the strange craft? Where did it come from? It’s a story that has more questions than answers. Michalak never claimed the craft was an alien one; neither did he waver in his account of what he had seen and experienced that day, even under thescrutiny of doctors, scientists, law enforcement officials and other authorities, who could neither corroborate nor disprove the close encounter. Canada is a hotbed of UFO activity! According to a survey, 1,131 UFO sightings were reported in Canada in 2016. But only 4% of these could not beexplained. Quebec also leads all other provinces inreported UFO sightings. In 1967 (the same year as the Falcon Lake Incident), the world’s first UFO landing pad was built inSt. Another famous Canadian UFO sighting took place in 1967 – this time, in Shag Harbour, N. Where a series of orange lights were seen flashing in the sky before the unknown object crashed into the ocean. In 2016, a public opinion poll reported that four in five Canadians believe intelligent life existselsewhere in the universe, and nearly half of thosepolled believed aliens had already visited Earth. Coin is in great condition. Fine silver coin, 99.99% pure. THE COIN AND ITS DESCRIPTION AS PER THE ROYAL CANADIAN MINT SITE. New use of EHR technology! The Canadian Rockies rise to new heights on this pure silver coin. Turquoise waters, snow-capped mountains and unparalleled alpine scenery-the beauty of Lake Louise is legendary, and this pure silver coin celebrates all the geographic elements that make it one of Canada’s great treasures! Never before has the Canadian landscape been rendered so realistically as on this coin’s reverse. Its design features an overhead view of the Lake Louise area, and while Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) technology sends the Canadian Rockies soaring to new heights, beautiful Lake Louise is unmissable thanks to coloured enamel that highlights the crown jewel of Banff National Park. A new RCM benchmark: This is the highest relief we’ve ever achieved on a 50 mm coin. This marks the first time Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) has been applied to a 50 mm coin. In addition to the EHR technology, the RCM was able to frost the top of the mountain peaks and glaciers to give them a silvery, snow-capped appearance. This mesmerizing combination of topographic mapping, EHR and selective enamelling is the product of close collaboration between our engineering and engraving teams, who spared no effort in their attempt to create the most realistic rendering possible. Only 3,000 are available to collectors and geography enthusiasts worldwide. Don’t miss out-order your coin today! The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. Innovative use of EHR technology. For a more realistic rendering of the terrain, your coin’s reverse mixes sunken relief (Lake Louise) and EHR technology (Canadian Rockies) that adds extra height. One of Canada’s most photogenic locations, Lake Louise is famous for its turquoise waters that are re-created here using translucent coloured enamel over engraved relief. Geography on both sides. The geography theme extends to your coin’s obverse, which shares the same field pattern as the reverse’s outer rim. This pattern consists of contour lines that typically illustrate relief on a topographic map. 99.99 % pure silver. Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box. Beginning in late spring, Victoria Glacier’s meltwater carries silt or rock flour (fine-grained particles of rock) into Lake Louise, where these particles stay suspended in the water-in fact, the lake’s vivid colour is caused by sunlight reflecting off these particles. If you’re hoping to see those turquoise waters in person, you’ll want to time your visit carefully. A sunny day is best but the waters also need to have a high concentration of suspended rock flour particles. Peak time is July and August, when glacial run-off is at its highest; September and early October are also good times to visit, but the colour fades as the silt settles and meltwater tapers off. Based on elevation modelling, your coin’s reverse features Extraordinary High Relief (EHR) technology that adds height to this realistic rendering of the terrain surrounding Lake Louise in Banff National Park (Alberta), in the Canadian Rockies. Glaciers and mountain peaks are frosted to create a silvery snow-capped effect. Lake Louise is struck incuse and filled in with translucent colour enamel that mimics its famous turquoise waters. Inspired by topographic maps, contour lines form a field pattern that frames the reverse and continues on the obverse, which features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Matt Eggink, Product Manager, RCM. It was a thrilling experience to see Lake Louise and the surrounding terrain come to life on a coin. Working alongside our R&D staff continues to be a privilege, and with new avenues to explore, there is never a dull moment! Rick Kubian, Field Unit Superintendent, Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay, Parks Canada. Lake Louise, with its iconic turquoise waters, has captivated travellers in the Rocky Mountains since time immemorial. Today, Parks Canada welcomes visitors from around the world to take in the breathtaking glaciers and mountain landscapes, hike to incredible viewpoints, and share in the history of this unforgettable place. Using satellite mapping data, we were able to translate the geography of the Lake Louise area into a 3D model-a first for us! Despite the technical challenges of creating height and rendering the mountain range in fine detail, the final product is truly a stunning and unique representation of Canadian geography. Yannick Cormier, Senior Research Engineer, R&D. The Lake Louise coin is another great innovation from the Royal Canadian Mint. We can appreciate the relief’s details of the mountains around Lake Louise area, which are located on multiple areas and non-centered on the coin, whereas for typical coins, the high relief area is centered. The maximum relief height for a typical 50mm diameter is 0.25mm while for this coin the maximum relief is more than 15 times higher! Another novelty is we were able to introduce real-life topographic satellite data in our design software in order to be able to manufacture the die as close as we can to replicate the real topography of the area on the coin.
