Though Canada has had one-dollar coinage since the introduction of the famed Voyageur silver dollar in 1935, the loonie first garnered worldwide notice when it entered circulation in 1987. Since then, it has become a symbol of Canada’s connection to its stunning wilderness and of the unique Canadian spirit. The reverse image by Canadian artist Robert Carmichael features the profile portrait of a common loon floating on a still lake with a small island populated by conifers in the left-side background. The loon, waterway, and tree-lined island are selectively coloured. The reverse is also engraved with the text CANADA and DOLLAR and the date 2016. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Her Majesty’s portrait is gold-plated. Mintage of 1,500. Composition: Silver (99.99% pure). Weight (g) 157.6. Diameter (mm) 65.25. The item “CANADA 2016 $1 5oz FINE SILVER COIN BIG COIN SERIES LOONIE” is in sale since Monday, October 17, 2016.
