Pure Silver Coin – Canadian Maples – Mintage: 500 (2019). It is one of Canada’s classic coin designs, and it is the inspiration for your soon-to-be classic collector piece that has a decidedly traditional feel. Our modern-day tribute has replaced the Victorian boughs with a wreath of different maple leaves-one from each of the 10 species that are native to Canada. These are also the leaves that inspired the Dominion Sculptor’s motifs for the new interim Senate chamber in Ottawa, where they add a touch of Canada’s natural heritage to glass panels, wood doors, and wall panels. All of Canada’s maples are together on this sculpted tribute to a classic design! A MODERN PIECE WITH A TRADITIONAL FEEL! Your pure silver coin features a more traditional take on Canada’s different maple leaves, as designed by the Dominion Sculptor of Canada. A NOD TO CANADA’S EARLY COIN DESIGNS! DESIGNED BY PARLIAMENT HILL’S MASTER CARVER! The focus of your coin is on the sculpting, and with good reason: your coin was designed by Dominion Sculptor Phil White, Canada’s master carver on Parliament Hill. There are no colour enhancements or special technology on your coin-this piece is all about world-class sculpting, with well-defined lines and a crisp impression against an expert proof finish. OUR FIRST COIN TO FEATURE ALL 10 CANADIAN MAPLES! Each leaf represents one of 10 maple species that are native to Canada-from the towering bigleaf maple to the shrub-like vine maple. Previous coins have featured one or several species, but this is the first coin to feature all 10 together in one design. Only 500 coins will be made worldwide. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. The maple-themed arrangement features one leaf from each of Canada’s 10 native Acer species, which are (clockwise from top right): the bigleaf maple A. Macrophyllum, striped maple A. Pensylvanicum, Manitoba maple A. Negundo, Douglas maple A. Glabrum, mountain maple A. Spicatum, sugar maple A. Saccharum, vine maple A. Circinatum, red maple A. Rubrum, black maple A. Nigrum and silver maple A. Also engraved on the reverse are the face value’100 DOLLARS’, the word’CANADA’, and the year’2019′. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. As Dominion Sculptor, Philip White is responsible for the conservation and creation of sculptures and artwork that adorn Canada’s Parliamentary Buildings in Ottawa, Ontario. The iconic Centre Block building was purposely left unfinished, even after the Peace Tower was inaugurated in 1927, with thousands of uncarved stone blocks that have since allowed sculptors to tell Canada’s story as it unfolds. Wyon’s crossed maple bough design made its debut on the Province of Canada’s coins in 1858, when the decimal system was first introduced. Although it preceded Confederation by nearly a decade, it was prominently featured on the first coins struck for the Dominion of Canada in 1870. Different variations of the design continued to appear on Canada’s silver denominations (5, 10, 25 and 50 cents), but it was superseded by new designs in 1937. While a regular 1 cent coin has a diameter of 19 mm and a weight of just 2.25 grams in base metal, this one cent has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 68 regular one cent coins. The coin is double or triple struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective rose coloured gold plating on both sides, highlighting the coin’s main design and the effigy of the queen. The Great Lakes are the world’s largest system of fresh surface water. Its five lakes-Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario-are visible from the moon and hold about 20% of the world’s freshwater supply. They were carved out and filled by prehistoric glaciers, and cover more than 243,000 kilometres squared. This is one of the most biologically diverse regions in Canada with more than 150 fish and 50 plant species, some of which are not found anywhere else on earth. This series by the Royal Canadian Mint showcases the uniqueness of Canada’s Great Lakes. Some key features make the reverse of these coins exceptional, such as the deep negative relief (incuse) used to indicate varying depths of the lake. The space is then filled with vibrant, translucent blue enamel that shimmers on the surface of the coin the way the lake would shimmer under the white light of the Canadian sun. The lake is surrounded by a high-relief topographical map of the land around it, and is further encircled by the points on a compass, with an arrow pointing due north. The face value of “20 dollars” can be seen to the right of the lake, while the bottom rim of the coin displays the name of the lake pictured. Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). 31.1 g (1 troy ounce). Face Value 30 dollars. Reverse Jori van der Linde. Enhanced with metallic colour, your coin’s reverse features a zodiac wheel designed by artist Jori van der Linde. This celestial circle is divided into 12 30-degree sections that house each of the 12 signs of the zodiac; these are arranged in a counter-clockwise direction, as indicated by the roman numerals on the outer ring: Aries (‘I’), Taurus (‘II’), Gemini (‘III’), Cancer (‘IV’), Leo (‘V’), Virgo (‘VI’), Libra (‘VII’), Scorpio (‘VIII’), Sagittarius (‘IX’), Capricorn (‘X’), Aquarius (‘XI’) and Pisces (‘XII’). Each zodiac sign is paired with its corresponding glyph, and together, these 12 glyphs form an inner ring that surrounds the combined sun and moon motif at the centre of the wheel. When viewed under a black light, the 12 zodiac constellations appear in the inner ring. The obverse features a field pattern and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Jori van der Linde, Artist. The number of elements incorporated into this design made it a really fun yet challenging project! The roman numerals on the outer ring are associated with the astrological houses-they run in a counter-clockwise direction in order to match up with the symbols in the next two rings. The zodiac illustrations proved to be some of the more natural, easy elements to draw, while the technical layout was much more challenging to complete. It seemed only fitting to have the sun and moon as the central motifs, with all the other zodiac elements rotating around them. JORI VAN DER LINDE, ARTIST.
