The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes and one of the most widely distributed members of the order Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included on the list of the “world’s 100 worst invasive species”. The red fox originated from smaller-sized ancestors from Eurasia during the Middle Villafranchian period, and colonised North America shortly after the Wisconsin glaciation. Among the true foxes, the red fox represents a more progressive form in the direction of carnivory. Apart from its large size, the red fox is distinguished from other fox species by its ability to adapt quickly to new environments. Despite its name, the species often produces individuals with other colourings, including leucistic and melanistic individuals. Forty-five subspecies are currently recognised, which are divided into two categories: the large northern foxes, and the small, basal southern foxes of Asia and North Africa. Red foxes are usually together in pairs or small groups consisting of families, such as a mated pair and their young, or a male with several females having kinship ties. The young of the mated pair remain with their parents to assist in caring for new kits. The species primarily feeds on small rodents, though it may also target rabbits, game birds, reptiles, invertebrates and young ungulates. Fruit and vegetable matter is also eaten sometimes. Although the red fox tends to kill smaller predators, including other fox species, it is vulnerable to attack from larger predators, such as wolves, coyotes, golden jackals and medium- and large-sized felines. The species has a long history of association with humans, having been extensively hunted as a pest and furbearer for many centuries, as well as being represented in human folklore and mythology. Because of its widespread distribution and large population, the red fox is one of the most important furbearing animals harvested for the fur trade. Domestication of the red fox is also underway in Russia, and has resulted in the domesticated red fox. 999 Diameter: 38.6 mm Weight: 1 oz – 31.1g Finish: COLOR AND SILVER Certificate COA: Yes Box: Yes. Thecougar(Puma concolor), also commonly known by other names includingcatamount, mountain lion, panther, andpuma, is a largefelidof the subfamily Felinaenative to the Americas. Itsrange, from the CanadianYukonto the southernAndesof South America, is the widest of any large wild terrestrial mammal in theWestern Hemisphere. An adaptable, generalistspecies, the cougar is found in most Americanhabitattypes. It is thebiggest catinNorth America, and the second-heaviest cat in theNew Worldafter thejaguar. Secretive and largely solitary by nature, the cougar is properly considered bothnocturnalandcrepuscular, although daytime sightings do occur. The cougar is more closely related to smaller felines, including thedomestic cat(subfamily Felinae), than to any species of subfamily Pantherinae, of which only the jaguar is native to the Americas. The cougar is anambush predatorthat pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources areungulates, particularlydeer. It also hunts species as small as insects androdents. This cat prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but can also live in open areas. The cougar isterritorialand survives at low population densities. Individual territory sizes depend on terrain, vegetation, and abundance of prey. While large, it is not always theapex predatorin its range, yielding to the jaguar, gray wolf, American black bear, andgrizzly bear. It is reclusive and mostly avoids people. Fatal attacks on humansare rare, but have recently been increasing in North America as more people enter cougar territories. Intensive hunting followingEuropean colonization of the Americasand the ongoing human development of cougar habitat has caused populations to drop in most parts of its historical range. 999 Diameter: 38.6 mm Weight: 1 oz – 31.1g Finish: COLOR AND SILVER Certificate COA: Yes Box: Yes. DESCRIPTION The wolf (Canis lupus), [a] also known as the grey/gray wolf or timber wolf, is a caninenative to the wilderness and remote areas of Eurasia and North America. It is the largest extant member of its family, with males averaging 4345 kg (9599 lb) and females 3638.5 kg (7985 lb). [6] It is distinguished from other Canis species by its larger size and less pointed features, particularly on the ears and muzzle. Its winter fur is long and bushy and predominantly a mottled gray in color, although nearly pure white, red, and brown to black also occur. Mammal Species of the World 3rd ed. 2005, a standard reference work in zoology, recognises 38 subspecies of C. The gray wolf is the second most specializedmember of the genus Canis, after the Ethiopian wolf, as demonstrated by its morphologicaladaptations to hunting large prey, its more gregarious nature, and its highly advanced expressive behavior. It is nonetheless closely related enough to smaller Canis species, such as the coyote, and golden jackal, to produce fertile hybrids. It is the only species of Canis to have a range encompassing both the Old and New Worlds, and originated in Eurasia during the Pleistocene, colonizing North America on at least three separate occasions during the Rancholabrean. It is a social animal, travelling in nuclear families consisting of a mated pair, accompanied by the pair’s adult offspring. The gray wolf is typically an apex predator throughout its range, with only humansand tigers posing a serious threat to it. It feeds primarily on large ungulates, though it also eats smaller animals, livestock, carrion, and garbage. A seven-year-old wolf is considered to be relatively old, and the maximum lifespan is about 16 years. The global gray wolf population is estimated to be 300,000. The gray wolf is one of the world’s best-known and most-researched animals, with probably more books written about it than any other wildlife species. It has a long history of association with humans, having been despised and hunted in most pastoral communities because of its attacks on livestock, while conversely being respected in some agrarian and hunter-gatherer societies. Although the fear of wolves is pervasive in many human societies, the majority of recorded attacks on people have been attributed to animals suffering from rabies. Non-rabid wolves have attacked and killed people, mainly children, but this is rare, as wolves are relatively few, live away from people, and have developed a fear of humans from hunters and shepherds. 999 Diameter: 38.6 mm Weight: 1 oz – 31.1g Finish: COLOR AND SILVER Certificate COA: Yes Box: Yes.
