2011, 1 Kilo Coin, $250 Pure Silver Coin Canada, First European Anniversary
J & M Coin and Jewellery. Lacrosse is sport, legend, culture and history combined-a unique feature of the Canadian identity that emerged when European colonists encountered First Nations society. One of the first European documentations of this powerful sport is believed to have been written 375 years ago in 1636 by Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf from Condé-sur-Vire (France). Brébeuf became acquainted with baggataway (original name for Lacrosse) while living among the Hurons. Countless tribes engaged in? The Creator’s Game, ? Firm in the belief the Creator invented the game for His own amusement. Players took to the field with the highest ideals. Lacrosse was a training ground for young warriors and was a non-warring means to settle tribal disputes. Players were determined to bring honour and glory to their teammates and to their tribes. Matches could cover vast territories and last months at a time. In an effort to intimidate their opponents, players covered their faces with war paint; a ritual believed to be the inspirationbehind the modern custom of painting hockey goalie masks. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box. Colour over engraved relief. Each season has an established colour association, and those seasonal hues mirror the shades found in nature. They are well represented in this collage, where the use of colour over the engraved relief and changing colour schemes reflects nature’s cyclical transformation. Your coin’s collage illustrates how nature is a key part of Canada’s identity. It features a composite of landscapes and wildlife species from across Canada, and it seamlessly combines them to ensure a smooth transition from one seasonal view to the next. Composition 99.99% pure silver with colour over engraved relief. Weight 94.25 g. Packaging Black clamshell with black beauty box. Artist Caitlin Lindstrom-Milne (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse). It isn’t just the landscape that undergoes a colourful transformation each year-some animals do too! Fiery reds, burnt orange and golden yellows-the colours we associate with fall and fall leaves are mostly present in the landscape during spring and summer too, they’re just masked by chlorophyll, a green pigment that is vital for photosynthesis. The red colours are produced in the autumn, in response to bright light and plant sugars in the leaves. As summer turns to fall and sunlight decreases, leaves stop producing chlorophyll, which fades away to reveal other colours caused by various pigments: xanthophyll for yellow, carotenoid for orange, and anthocyanin for red. And once those pigments break down, only tannins remain in the leaves, resulting in a brown colour. Designed by artist Caitlin Lindstrom-Milne, your coin’s reverse features a composite of landscape features from across Canada, framed by the outline of a black maple (Acer nigrum) leaf and backed by Canada geese (Branta canadensis) flying in a V formation-a sign of the changing seasons in Canada. The four-season view begins with a spring scene on the left, where a tundra swan (Cygnus columbianus) swims past flowery meadows and mountains under a colourful morning sky. The scene transitions to a bright summer day, as a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) catches its next meal. Beneath the migrating geese in the sky, the green foliage turns to red, orange, brown and yellow in the fall view, in which the setting sun casts its glow on the grasslands and the iconic bison (Bison bison). The final view, with its sleepy Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), captures the tranquil beauty of winter in Canada, while an iceberg adrift in the ocean hints at the eventual return of spring. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign. Canada has so many beautiful places to visit, so it was tough to choose just a few. I narrowed it down to a few places that I would personally love to visit, and I visualised myself standing there, watching animals as they enjoy their natural habitats. The sight of geese flying above in their V formation always serves as a reminder that summer is coming to an end, and that we should make the most of those last few weeks. The coin was centered around the seasons, and migrating geese have always signified the changing of the seasons for me. Alicia Cook Sapene, Product Manager. We are very fortunate to live in a country with boundless natural beauty. I wanted to showcase a breathtaking collage of Canada’s four seasons, with contrasting landscapes and colours filling the shape of a black maple leaf. Caitlin did an amazing job of seamlessly blending together the natural splendour of the seasons! ALICIA COOK SAPENE, PRODUCT MANAGER.
