2022 Canada $20 Fine Silver Coin Colourful Birds Cedar Waxwing

2022 Canada $20 Fine Silver Coin Colourful Birds Cedar Waxwing

2022 Canada $20 Fine Silver Coin Colourful Birds Cedar Waxwing

Colourful Birds: Cedar Waxwing. The star of the Royal Canadian Mint’s second Colourful Birds series coin, the cedar waxwing has a distinctive appearance thanks to its slicked-back crest, black mask and silky yellow-brown feathers. This gregarious species loves to forage in flocks and can be found in all of Canada’s provinces and territories. It has an appetite for insects and small fruits, including those of the flowering crab apple tree featured in this nature-themed coin design. Some cedar waxwings have orange tail tips instead of the usual yellow. This happens when a young waxwing eats a lot of berries from a specific type of honeysuckle and the fruit’s red pigment shifts the colour of the immature tail feathers. See the red “drops” on the tips of its feathers? Those are actually waxy secretions on the wing feathers, hence the “waxwing” name (the “cedar” part refers to its love of cedar berries in the winter). It’s not clear what purpose the wax spots serve, but some ornithologists believe they’re related to courtship. A lot of fruit in one place can be too much of a good thing for the cedar waxwing! It can become intoxicated after gorging on overripe berries and fruits. The reverse design by Canadian artist Tony Bianco features an eye-level view of a cedar waxwing (Bombycilla ccedrorum) in an engraved backyard setting, where a stone walkway leads to a lattice arch. In the foreground, the soft pastel colours of the flowering crab apple (genus Malus) tree complement the cedar waxwing’s mix of yellow, brown, grey, white and red feathers. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. A follow-up to 2021′s Blue Jay, the cedar waxwing is the star of the second Colourful Birds-themed 1 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin. Selective colour highlights both the bird and its flowering perch, and transforms the design into a celebration of Mother Nature’s vibrant colour combinations. An immersive scene! The eye-level view pulls you into the scene and creates the impression that you’re standing right next to the bird. Only 7,500 are available to collectors worldwide. Packaging: The coin comes encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell case with a black beauty box. Meticulously sculpted in 99.99percent pure silver and running counterclockwise in zodiacal order (’1′ to’12′) around the Sun and Moon (centre), each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac is represented by a classical figure in the outer circle and a glyph in the inner portion, while touches of celestial colours speak to humanity’s endless fascination with the night sky. Wise men have followed the stars for millenniums. In all cultures around the world there are representations of astrology and a vast public following. This coin is presented to bear witness to this celestial association. Both astrology and astronomy have a relationship to the zodiac. The zodiac is a primal factor in understanding the heavens. Enhanced with selective colour, the reverse design by artist Steve Hepburn features an engraved celestial illustration of the Sun and Moon surrounded by the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Inspired by classical Greek sculpture, the figures representing each sign on the outer circle are paired with their corresponding glyph in the second band, which is set against a colourful night sky, and these are numbered based on their zodiacal order (beginning at the top and moving in a counterclockwise direction): Aries (’1′), Taurus (’2′), Gemini (’3′), Cancer (’4′), Leo (’5′), Virgo (’6′), Libra (’7′), Scorpio (’8′), Sagittarius (’9′), Capricorn (’10′), Aquarius (’11′) and Pisces (’12′). The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign. Next time you’re checking out the astrology section in your paper or online, remember that the earliest recorded horoscope dates back to the 4th century BCE in ancient Mesopotamia-this should give you some perspective on our enduring fascination with astrology. With their deep symbolic meaning and unique characters, the signs of the zodiac are a wonderful subject for any artist to work with. This was a fun project to be a part of, and that I’ll never look at the daily horoscope section the same way again!
