This coin is struck in one troy ounce of 99.99% fine silver, and features a mintage of 10,000 coins. As a pure silver coin, this item is GST/HST-exempt. Some key features make the reverse of these coins exceptional, such as the deep negative relief (incuse) used to indicate varying depths of the lake. The space is then filled with vibrant, translucent blue enamel that shimmers on the surface of the coin the way the lake would shimmer under the white light of the Canadian sun. The lake is surrounded by a high-relief topographical map of the land around it, and further encircled by the points on a compass, with an arrow pointing due north. The face value of “20 DOLLARS” can be seen to the right of the lake, while the bottom rim of the coin reads “LAKE MICHIGAN/LAC MICHIGAN”. Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume, and the third largest by surface area; it is also the only of the Great Lakes to be located entirely within the United States. Originally, the word “Michigan” referred to the lake itself, as it comes from the Ojibwa word mishigami, meaning “great water”. The earliest known human inhabitants of the area around Lake Michigan were the Hopewell peoples, whose culture began to decline around 800 CE. In the few hundred years after that, the region became home to the Woodland peoples; by the time the first western European explorers came into the region in the early 17th century, they met the descendants of these Woodland people. The French explorer Jean Nicolet is likely the first non-aboriginal person to reach Lake Michigan, at some point in the 1630s. The Great Lakes are the worlds largest system of fresh surface water. Its five lakes – Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario – are visible from the moon. Together, they hold about 20% of the worlds freshwater supply. They were carved out and filled by prehistoric glaciers, and cover more than 243,000 km2 93,823 sq. This is one of the most biologically diverse regions in Canada with more than 150 fish and 50 plant species, some of which are not found anywhere else on earth. Formed by powerful forces of time and geology, the amazing Great Lakes form a vast, continuously flowing waterway system that links central North America to the Atlantic. This system holds about one-fifth of the planets fresh water, its lakes are so large that they are visible from space. The fourth coin in this exciting series of fine silver enameled coins featuring the amazing Great Lakes highlights lovely Lake Michigan. A stunning gift for friends or family who love natural wonders, geography, history, and the beautiful North American landscape. This coin, Lake Michigan, is the fourth in the exciting 5-coin Great Lakes series. Lake Michigan is sunk into the face of the coin, with the varying depths highlighted in relief and multiple frosting techniques, and then filled with vibrant translucent blue enamel. This unique approach to showcasing the lake highlights the depths that typically remain hidden from view. The lake shape and depths are based on bathymetric data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. This means that this proof-finish fine silver enameled coin will be highly sought after. For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt. This coin features an interpretation of a bathymetric map of Lake Michigan highlighted with colored enamel. Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell case lined with flock, as shown in photos. Check out my other items. Be sure to add me to your favorites list. So our costs for Canadian coins also vary from day to day. Unsearched All of the coins offered in this listing are unsearched. Many coin dealers search all coins when they are received from the Mint. They “cherry-pick” the best coins. Then submit them to be graded, certified, and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc. When a dealer searches coins, those that they sell in original Mint packaging are only lesser quality coins. Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed. Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered. Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces. However, tilting the coin may resulting one side being slightly out of focus. Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint. We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting. We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits. The item “Canada 2015 $20 Lake Michigan 1 oz.
