2017 Canada Ancient – Ogygopsis 1 oz. This antiqued, lacquered silver coin featuring the Ogygopsis fossil is the second release of the Royal Canadian Mint’s Ancient Canada series. The Ogygopsis is an ancient sea creature called a trilobite, whose fossilized remains were found in the Mount Stephen Trilobite Beds in British Columbia’s Yoho National Park. The coin is struck from 1 Troy oz. 9999 fine silver in a manner similar to that used by the ancient Romans, which results in an irregular shape with a 38 mm minimum diameter. The reverse features an actual sized fossilized dorsal exoskeleton of a young Ogygopsis Klotzi, surrounded by a sandstone-like texture, finished with an antiqued patina.
